Bob Flynn grew up in Voorheesville, N.Y., graduating from Clayton A. Bouton High School in 1981. He has a bachelor’s degree in broadcasting and journalism from Florida Southern College (1985) and a master’s in Sport Leadership from Virginia Commonwealth University (2011). He had an award-winning career in the newspaper profession, spending more than 30 years at The Ledger (Lakeland, Fla.), The Sun (San Bernardino, Calif.), The Daily Press (Newport News, Va.) and the Times-Dispatch (Richmond, Va.) While the majority of his time was as an editor and page designer, he has written about almost every sport and at every level, beginning with high schools. He has covered PGA, LPGA and Champions Tour events, professional baseball, college basketball (men’s and women’s), college football and college baseball, as well as business, health, science and medicine. In addition to the newspapers mentioned above, his work has appeared in the Albany Times-Union, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today and numerous online outlets.
He had worked in Marketing and College Relations at Virginia Peninsula Community College since 2018. He continues to do freelance work, mostly college sports. He also is one of the official scorers for the Richmond Flying Squirrels, the Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants.
In his free time, he enjoys cycling and supporting the College of William & Mary women’s basketball team.
He lives in Gloucester, Va., with his wife, Sue. They have two children, James and Erin, and a daughter-in-law, Meredith.
